Just under a year ago, it was announced District 9 and Chappie director Neill Blomkamp is lending his services to a AAA multiplayer shooter for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Fast forward to today and the project has been revealed as Off The Grid, a Battle Royale game that adds a narrative focus to the online genre. It's scheduled to launch for PS5 in 2023, and the first teaser trailer can be viewed above. No PS4 version has been confirmed.
Blomkamp is joined by Altered Carbon author Richard K. Morgan on the title, which as footage would suggest, is set in a "dystopian future". Off The Grid even has an executive narrative director, so it's clear story will be at the forefront of the game.
A press reveals that the traditional Battle Royale portion of the experience will pit 150 players against one another in a battle to see who comes out on top, but then there'll also be a PvE offering with story missions "using the same map inhabited by other players in real time". The decisions you make will supposedly impact on everyone else's game, with customisation, crafting, and trading all core components of the game.
Neil Blomkamp describes Off The Grid as Battle Royale 2.0 with deep player progression. "With an innovative approach to the Battle Royale core session flow and a deep narrative experience, we add purpose to each element of the game, allowing players to revisit the OTG world repeatedly where there is always something new to find and explore, and for us to expand upon." More information will be shared in the coming months.

Not a fan of the Battle Royale formula so I probably won't play this - but I'm curious what Blomkamp can bring to games in general.
Any Battle Royale that's not from a big AAA developer is destined to fail straight away, look at spellbreak, Darwin project, CRSED, H1Z1 and Realm Royale, all flopped and now pretty much dead.
Yet the main 3 Fortnite, Call of duty warzone and Apex Legends are all going strong and all have big AAA developers with a big budget to back it with meaty updates/content.
Dang if it wasn't a BR I might be more interested. The world looks really cool even just from that short trailer.
Wow! I can't believe it! Another live service battle royale game. Thats exactly what we needed!!! 👍🙄
@lolwhatno was thinking of the same! Also, isn't Pathfinder kinda based on Chappie?
@UltimateOtaku91 It's certainly a difficult genre to make an impact in. Even Hyperscape from Ubi failed, and was pretty much dead in the water a couple of weeks after release.
@UltimateOtaku91 I made this point the other day about that new Vampire one and got shot down in flames!
Oh dear.
Will it be of District 9 quality or more like Elysium and Chappie?
Sounds just like Bloodhunt. Has a little narrative sprinkled into it.
@daveofduncan yeah I'm not interested in blood hunt especially as a new vampire the masquerade game is out soon.
Please be good, please be good etc....
@darksoul77 the other game has had such an awful dev period, we should brace ourselves for disappointment
I was trying to be f'ing nice to you, man!
